Traditional braces or metal braces consist of metal brackets and wires. White or ceramic braces are similar in style and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-coloured or clear brackets that blend in with the teeth. This can help solve the concerns that many people have with the appearance of their braces, while also retaining their strength and effectiveness.
Traditional metal braces consists of small metal brackets that are bonded on to your teeth. Movement of the teeth is then achieved by engaging these brackets with thin metal wires that align your arches and corrects rotations and crowding giving you a nice straight smile. Traditional braces is the most popular choice for children and teenagers. Most often kids get to choose what colour bands they would like around their braces making every adjustment appointment something fun and different. Whilst traditional braces are more noticeable than other options such as clear bracers or clear aligner therapy they are sometimes the best choice depending on what we need to achieve with the braces. In general metal brace are more hygienic and stronger since the metal brackets are very slimline.
As with any dental treatment and option, there are advantages and disadvantages of each, and the suitability depends on your individual circumstances and dental issues. Whilst traditional braces are typically less expensive than clear aligner-style braces, they can be noticeable in the mouth, and in the case of ceramic braces, may stain easily if they are not well looked after. Traditional braces may however be the most suitable option for your particular dental problem as in certain instances they may be more effective and achieve the required result in a shorter time frame than clear aligners. Whilst this is a large benefit for many patients, clear braces do require more maintenance as they are more prone to breaking/chipping if not carefully looked after. To prevent this from happening too easily, clear braces are usually used for the upper font teeth, with the back teeth and lower teeth still bonded with traditional metal brackets. This provides patients with more subtlety when they smile and talk but still something stronger down the bottom to not hinder eating too much.
