Dental Veneers

Types of Veneers

Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. And while the two veneer types are made from different materials, both will match your teeth perfectly and provide you with a wonderful smile.

Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin slices of porcelain that are bonded to the front of your tooth. The translucent properties of the porcelain veneer allow it to shine as a natural tooth does, providing you with a bright, white smile. Porcelain veneers are also resistant to stains, which is one of the best benefits, as people who choose porcelain veneers don’t have to whiten their teeth. Porcelain veneers will last a long time, from 10-15 years.

Composite resin veneers

Composite resin veneers cost cheaper than porcelain veneers, however they are less resistant to staining so you will need to maintain them with regular checkups like normal teeth. They also have a shorter lifespan than porcelain veneers, with composite veneers typically lasting 4 – 8 years.

Veneers FAQs

Why do people get dental veneers?

Dental veneers can resolve crooked, broken, chipped or discoloured teeth – giving you back the confidence of a smile makeover. They can be used to correct spacing, teeth rotations, minor crowding or the shape of your teeth. Veneers can correct most aesthetic issues you might have with your smile.

What is the procedure for getting dental veneers?

The first step is a veneer consultation with your dentist to outline your goals and concerns. X-rays or impressions of your teeth may be needed. The second step is to prepare the tooth for the composite resin or porcelain veneer. Your dentist roughens the surface of the tooth and an impression is made. Your dentist will then place temporary veneers. At the next appointment, the temporary veneers are removed, and the final veneers are bonded to your teeth.

What are the advantages of dental veneers?

The preparation of dental veneers preserves the most amount of tooth structure, as very little needs to be removed. They can improve the appearance of your teeth, and gum tissues respond well to dental veneers. The colour can be custom selected, and in the case of porcelain veneers, they are stain resistant.

How long do dental veneers last on teeth?

Typically, a veneer lasts approximately 5-10 years. They do not require any special care other than regular brushing, flossing, and visits to the dentist. If they are properly cared for then they can last much longer. Professional cleanings every 6 months and yearly exams are highly recommended for veneers.

How many veneers do I need?

A dentist consultation is needed to determine how many veneers are required. It is a good idea to have an even number of veneers. Six, eight, ten or twelve veneers give the best aesthetic results and come in veneer packages, making them more affordable.
